Overlooking the Puget Sound near Kingston, WA, this remodel re-orients the house towards the horizon allowing the panorama to wash into the home, inviting the sun, the storms and the fog to the edge of the living room, and offering a sense of total immersion within this unblemished landscape.

Opposite this unlimited grandeur, three strategic “nooks” specifically designed for cooking, listening and working provide the private and introverted spaces. Each is treated as an aperture towards the landscape and reaches towards it, all the while remaining carefully sheltered and protective.

Studio PHH Architects. Studio PHH Architects is a Brooklyn-based design studio, led by Pierre-Henri Hoppenot, offering architecture, interior and furniture design services for residential and commercial clients across the country and internationally. The ambition for each project conceived, designed, and produced is to create spatial experiences that inspire, calm and energize. A good space is one where people want to stay whether gathering together or meditating alone. The core values that drive the work of the firm emerge from studio collaboration and a creative approach emphasizing the intrinsic relationship between architecture, landscape, interior and product design. The architecture produced is not shy but lives well in its surroundings through a deferential approach towards the site and a respect for local craft and materials and the culture of a place. Throughout the process, we methodically investigate material potential and couple these findings with an exploration of the inherent dichotomies present within a project - this often produces unique yet utilitarian features which become a project's identifying feature.
