Writer's Shed.

Writer's Shed is a compact garden studio by Melbourne architect Matt Gibson — a quiet, considered workspace tucked into the corner of a suburban backyard, where the boundary between building and garden is deliberately erased.

At its heart is Austral Hoop Pine plywood. Sustainably grown and uniquely Australian, it lines every interior surface — walls, ceiling, floor, desk, and shelving — giving the space a cohesive warmth that no paint or cladding could replicate. The material does more than unify the aesthetic; it speaks to responsible sourcing and the enduring character of one of Australia's finest plantation timbers, crafted by a manufacturer with a century of expertise behind it.

Outside, Boston ivy — chosen with landscape designer Ben Scott — consumes the exterior walls, naturally shading the interior and embedding the structure within its garden setting. A Butynol rubber membrane sits beneath, quietly doing the waterproofing work the ivy conceals.

A wraparound desk follows the building's angled corner cut, while a large garden-facing window and skylight keep the workspace bright and connected to the outdoors. A glass door opens to the garden; a mirrored door to the rear laneway.

Simple, low-tech, and thoughtfully made — Writer's Shed is proof that great small architecture starts with great materials.
